Yogi, Mama, Runner... Helping Mamas find the “Me” in Motherhood

JPT
It took a second for me to realize he had not come It took a second for me to realize he had not come down the slide with his sister and friends.

He stood at the top, cloth in hand. Step by step he moved to the side. My heart broke as I then watched him walk down the staircase, face drawn, fighting the current of kids running to the top with excitement and giggles.

As he got to the bottom, he asked “can I get my tickets back?”

“You don’t want to try it, Buddy?”

“No, mama. It’s too scary.”

His tickets were handed back and he ran to catch up with his friends. Almost immediately he moved on to the next ride.

I stayed with that heartbroken feeling of the slide for some time, until I realized he had done exactly as we had talked about.

He gave himself permission to feel.

He acknowledged and made a decision, and he moved on.

🔸Dear fear, you may have a seat at my table but not a room in my house.🔸

I want to entertain you. I want to get to know you so I may understand you better. I want to know how to have a conversation with you. I want to sit with you. I want to know what to do the next time you visit. Visit when you must.

But you cannot stay here. You cannot control every moment after this.

Catastrophizing. It’s a weird word, right? . Bu Catastrophizing. It’s a weird word, right?
.
But you know what? I think the majority of us are far more familiar with it than we realize.
.
It’s the thought that says “why haven’t they called? Maybe they got in an accident!”
.
Or the voice that questions every sound on take-off of your flight... imagining the worst.
.
It’s the story that plays in your mind that builds worry and stress, and makes you doubt your ability to cope.
.
This trap is not uncommon, so it’s important to recognize it, define it, and look for ways out of it.

Strong back. Soft front. . Today’s mantra comes Strong back. Soft front.

Today’s mantra comes curtesy of Zen Buddhist teacher Joan Halifax.
.
This quote hit me hard today. If you do no other self-care today, at least read this:
.
“All too often our so-called strength comes from fear not love; instead of having a strong back, many of us have a defended front shielding a weak spine. In other words, we walk around brittle and defensive, trying to conceal our lack of confidence. If we strengthen our backs, metaphorically speaking, and develop a spine that's flexible but sturdy, then we can risk having a front that's soft and open, representing choiceless compassion. The place in your body where these two meet - strong back and soft front - is the brave, tender ground in which to root our caring deeply.

How can we give and accept care with strong-back, soft front compassion, moving past fear into a place of genuine tenderness? I believe it comes about when we can be truly transparent, seeing the world clearly - and letting the world see into us."
